Repair Hard Drive Bad Sector, Case No. 5

Step 1. Preparation Before Repair

  • Download Hiren's Boot CD 9.9 (iso file)
  • Download BurnCDCC
  • Make bootable CD, Hiren's Boot CD 9.9
  • You can use the Hiren's BootCD, higher version

Step 2. Damage Analysis

  • Turn on computer, press Delete/Esc/F2 to enter BIOS
  • SATA Controller Mode. SATA Controller Mode from AHCI, changed to IDE / Compatibility
  • Setting the boot. First boot is CD Room
  • Insert Hiren's CD 9.9, save the BIOS settings and restart
  • When Hiren's Boot CD menu appears, select Start Mini Windows XP - Enter.

  • Damage Analysis No. 1. Checking partition. How; Press START - Programs - Administrative Tools - Disk Management. Open the Disk Management to check the system partition. When the drive had bad sectors, possibly corrupted system partition. Information from Disk Management is very important, because we can find out where the bad sectors, and its effect on the drive, so that we can make a decision before the repair begins.

  • Information from Disk Management, follow up by checking; location and the number of bad sectors. Inspection is done by HDD Regenerator. HDD Regenerator can be found in Hiren's BootCD 9.9
  • Damage Analysis No.2. Checking bad sectors. Restart the computer - Start BootCD - Hard Disk Tools - HDD Regenerator - Enter - Scan, but do not repair (show bad sectors). Information about the location of bad sectors, and the number of bad sectors is very important.
  • When the scan, but do not repair (show bad sectors), the obtained results as shown below, follow the next steps

Step 3. Improvement
  • Insert Hiren's BootCD - Restart the computer - Start BootCD - Hard Disk Tools - HDD Regenerator - Enter - Scan and repair (1)
  • Scan and repair must be done to complete, should not be forced to stop, should not be interrupted.
  • Scan and repair, must be 100% complete, although it takes a long time
  • After the scan and repair is completed, the next step is to save the data.

  • If the scan and repair, sudden stops, and the message as shown below, turn off the computer or laptop, rest hard drive about an hour (to lower the temperature of the drive), and then repeat the scan and repair.
  • Special conditions. 1. If the scan and repair running very slow, 2. If the scan and repair takes a very long time (over 4 hours), 3. If the scan and repair always stop suddenly, mean, bad sectors in the drive so badly. In this condition, there will be a drive failure, or will happen SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Drive. In this condition, the drive is not feasible to use. In this condition, repairs done in order to save the data. Saving data, with very severe bad condition, is a very difficult job. If you have trouble doing it myself, I recommend, leave this job to the professionals
  • Note; so that data can be saved, scan and repair bad sectors, should be 100% complete.
Step 4. Data Rescue
  • Rescue Data. After the scan and repair with HDD Regenerator is complete, turn off the computer / laptop. Remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer.
  • Preparation; 1. Turn off screen saver, 2. Power schemes, Turn off monitor = never, turn of hard disk = never, 3.  Disable/delete all Scheduled Task, 4. Disconnect internet, 5. Free space to save the data, 6. Do not open any other applications during data recovery process, 7. Don't open drive bad. Example; drive master (normal disk) = C,D and E (CD Room). Drive bad F,G,H. Bad located on drive F and G. Don't open drive F/G, from windows explorer or my computer, because can bring new bad sectors (new bad sectors appear).
  • Bad sector location on drive F/G. To rescue data on drive F/G, done with recovery software. Example; EASEUS Data Recovery, Get Data Back, etc.
  • Drive H normal or no bad found. To rescue the data, can be done by copy and paste.
  • Rescue data on drive bad, I recommended don't do by copy and paste, because can bring new bad sectors (new bad sectors appear).
  • If rescue data on drive bad is fail, QUICK FORMAT drive bad (DON'T FULL FORMAT), and repeat recovery process. If file system drive bad is NTFS - quick format NTFS, if FAT32 - quick format FAT32.
  • If recovery data on drive bad still fail, repeat the scan and repair process with HDD Regenerator. Example; bad on drive F (100 GB). Scan and repair from 0 - 100 GB. After process is finish, rest disk few hours, then repeat recovery process with GET Data Back. How to recover; recover is done in several stages, for example; recovery of 0 - 30 GB, 29 GB - 50 GB, 49 GB - 70 GB, 69 GB - 100 GB. This method is done when, recovering from 0-100 GB always failed, then recovered done in several stages.

  • So, how to recover data from drives bad, Step 1. Scan and repair bad sectors. Step 2. To drive there are bad found, done with recovery software. To drive that is no bad found, done by copy and paste.
Step 6. Feasibility Study
  • For this case, scan and repair or Low Level Format, can't repair this case. For this case, although the disk successfully repaired, the damage will most likely occur again. After the data has been saved, you should use a new disk instead.
  • The main purpose repair disk to save the data.
  • If the number of bad on the disk too much, and bad layout spread across drives, then the best solution is to replace the hard drive.
