Analysis of Damage Flash Drive

In a flash drive repair, there are three steps that we do
  1. Analysis of damage (Identify type of damage)
  2. Save data
  3. Fix flash drive
Analysis of damage

1. Checking Properties (right-click the USB flash drive, select Properties)
Properties 1 (flash drive error)
File system = RAW, used space = 0 bytes, free space = 0 bytes
Properties 2 (flash drive error)
File system = unknown, used space = 0 bytes, free space = 0 bytes
Properties 3 (normal flash drive)
File system = FAT32, used space = 388 MB, free space = 3.34 GB
 
2. Checking Format (right-click the USB flash drive, select Format)
Not doing the formatting, so just look at flash drive capacity

Capacity 1 (error capacity)
Capacity = 10.6 MB
Capacity 2 (normal capacity)
Capacity = 3.73 GB

3. Checking Disk Management
Win XP = START - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management)
Win Vista and 7 = START - right click on Computer - select Manage - Storage - Disk Management.  



4. Check with USB Safely Remove software
Download and install USB Safely Remove, and then insert a flash drive into the computer.
USB Safely Remove is useful for detecting firmware damage on the flash drive


5. Flash drives bad sectors
To detect bad sectors can be done in three ways

a. Bad sectors can be seen directly
At the time of opening a flash drive and found files is damaged (see picture), meaning the cause of damage a flash drives is bad sectors.

b. Flash drives can not store data
Bad sector checking is done by software HD Tune. Download and install HD Tune.
Example: I have a flash drive 4 GB capacity, used space = 1 GB, free space = 3 GB. I want to save data into a flash drive (copy and paste). After copy - paste finish, removed a flash drive. Then a flash drive is inserted into another computer. At the time of a flash drive is opened, all of data I enter is lost. Problems like this is because a flash drives bad sectors.

If data stored on the position of Damaged Blocks (red), data will be lost. But if data is stored in the Normal Blocks (green), data will be stored. 

c. Bad sectors can be detected at the time of data recovery
At the time of saving data. Example: EASEUS Data Recovery, Get Data Back, etc.

Download and install EASEUS Data Recovery
When do data recovery, found files _000, _001, _002, _003, _004, _005, etc, it can be concluded, causes damage a flash drive is Bad Sector.


Step by step analysis of damage flash drive

1. Download and install software USB Safely Remove. Then open program

2. Insert a flash drive into a computer
  • If detected Generic Flash Disk = damage Firmware (flash drive can be repaired, data can not be saved).
  • If detected Transcend, PQI, Kingston, SanDisk, Toshiba = damage Partition Table (flash drive can be repaired, data can be saved)

3. Do check Properties, Format, and Disk Management
Type 1
USB Safely Remove detect = Generic Flash Disk (not detected brand flash drives)
File system = RAW
Used space = 0 bytes
Free space = 0 bytes
Capacity = 1.97 GB
When formatted = Windows was Unable to complete the format
Computer Management = Flash drive is detected
When formatted = The format did not complete successfully
Conclusion
Firmware damage (because,
detected = Generic Flash Disk) 
Flash drives can be fixed, data can not saved

Type 2
USB Safely Remove detect = eFortune USB Device (detected brand flash drives)
File system = RAW
Used space = 0 bytes
Free space = 0 bytes
Capacity = 10.6 MB
When formatted = The disk is write protected
Computer Management = Flash drive is detected
When formatted = The media is write protected
Conclusion
Firmware damage (because,
Capacity = 10.6 MB, When formatted = The disk is write protected)
Flash drives can be fixed, data can not saved


Type 3
USB Safely Remove detect = USB Memory Bar (not detected brand flash drives)
File system = unknown
Used space = 0 bytes
Free space = 0 bytes
Capacity = 10.6 MB
When formatted = Insert a disk, and then try again
Computer Management = Flash drive not detected
When formatted = can not format
Conclusion
Firmware damage (because,
Detected = USB Memory Bar, Capacity = 10.6 MB)
Flash drive bad sector (because, File system = unknown)
Flash drives can be fixed, data can not saved


Type 4
USB Safely Remove detect = Kingston Data Traveler (detected brand flash drives)
File system = RAW
Used space = 0 bytes
Free space = 0 bytes
Capacity = 1.97 GB
When formatted = Windows was unable to complete the format
Computer Management = Flash drive detected
When formatted = The format did not complete successfully
Conclusion
Partition Table damage (because,
File system = RAW)
Flash drives can be fixed, data can be saved

Type 5
USB Safely Remove detect = USB Device (not detected brand flash drives)
File system = FAT
Used space = 948 MB
Free space = 22.6 MB
Capacity = 971 MB
When formatted = Windows was unable to complete the format
Computer Management = Flash drive detected
When formatted = The format did not complete successfully
Note; flash drives can be opened, data can not be in copy, paste, and delete. 
Conclusion
Firmware damage (because, Kingston flash detected = USB Device, data can not be in copy, paste, and delete)
Flash drives can not be fixed, data can be saved (for Kingston)
Flash drive can be fixed, data can be saved (for Transcend, Pqi, SanDisk)

Type 6 
USB Safely Remove detect = Normal (detected brand flash drives)
File system = Normal (FAT, FAT32, NTFS)
Used space = Normal
Free space = Normal
Capacity = Normal
When formatted =
Flash drives can be formatted
Computer Management = Flash drive detected
When formatted =
Flash drives can be formatted

Characteristics of damage
There is a corrupted file in flash drive
 
Conclusion
Flash drives bad sectors (because, There is a corrupted file in flash drive)
Flash drives can be fixed, data can be saved

Type 7
USB Safely Remove detect = Normal (detected brand flash drives)
File system = Normal (FAT, FAT32, NTFS)
Used space = Normal
Free space = Normal
Capacity = Normal
When formatted =
Flash drives can be formatted
Computer Management = Flash drive detected
When formatted =
Flash drives can be formatted

Characteristics of damage
Data entered into a flash drive is lost. 
If the data is saved in "Normal blocks" (green), data will be stored.
If the data is saved in "Damaged blocks" (red). At the time files is inserted flash drive, files are saved. But, when a flash drive is removed, will be paste to another computer, files is lost.
Flash drive has been formatted, but the problem still occurs.
 
Conclusion
Flash drives bad sectors (because, flash drive can not keep data)
Flash drives can be fixed, data can be saved

Save data

To save data, you can use software EASEUS Data Recovery, Get Data Back, etc. For example, I use EASEUS Data Recovery.

Step by step Recovery Data with EASEUS Data Recovery
1. Download and install EASEUS Data Recovery
2. Open EASEUS Data Recovery
3. Select Complete Recovery
4. Select Drive USB Flash - Next. Wait until process is finish
5. Select file you want to be recover



When choosing a files you want to save, we can find the cause of damage to the flash drive. See the picture below.

From the results of data recovery, can be identified two types of damage, BAD SECTOR and VIRUS.

      1. There is damage to the firmware. characteristics of damage; file system = unknown, capacity = 10.6 MB.
      2. Because there is damage to the firmware, data can not be saved

      Transcend = use JetFlash Online Recovery
      PQI = use Dr.UFD
      Adata = use oru.exe
      Kingston = can not be repaired, because there is no software to help repair damaged firmware. Kingston does not release, software to repair the firmware.
